The West fjords are the historical ground of Gisla saga Súrssonar, one of the Icelandic Viking sagas. Through Iceland’s history this part of the country has been involved in many significant historical events such and only sea battle that has ever taken place in Iceland, Flóabardagi, where the two of the greatest chiefs of Iceland battled.
In modern time, the West fjords have seen a decrease in inhabitants with more and more people and businesses moving to the capital area. This evolution has opened up new opportunities in tourism and today you will find various tourist services in the bigger villages that focus on the magnificent nature in the area. Among the tours available are sea angling, boat trips to the glacial fjords and more.
